Creating Confident and Creative Mathematical Thinkers
Hello, I’m Lisa and I’m a secondary teacher in the Inner West of Sydney, specialising in Maths and Science (Bachelor of Education -Secondary). I tutor Year 7 – 12 maths and science including HSC Standard, Advanced, Extension 1, and IB mathematics. I’m currently available for tutoring in Ashfield.

I offer individualised programs focusing on skill building as well as mathematical literacy, reasoning, problem-solving and critical thinking with tailored weekly homework programs. Maths can be challenging but it’s also extremely satisfying when you personally master each skill, strengthen your problem solving abilities, and develop higher-order critical thinking skills. During our lessons, I can help you master each skill one at a time with one-on-one mentoring, an individual weekly study timetable, and repetitive practice using online and traditional resources. I hope to instill a love of both mathematics and lifelong learning in all the students I work with.
I teach during school hours and tutor after school hours in Ashfield. With my support and guidance, and provided students practice their skills (as maths is a skill based subject), I can guarantee an increase in confidence levels. I can also help students reach their academic goals and improve their personal best in Year 7 – 12 Maths using my strategies.
Maths is my favourite subject and my enthusiasm and love for the subject is obvious in all my lessons. It’s a great language that not only describes the physical universe but also models and solves complex problems in our changing and increasingly complex world. When students understand it, they”ll truly enjoy it and feel confident when it’s time to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. For HSC students who aren’t able to secure a session with me, I have developed Maths Whiz Academy online video courses for Year 11 and 12’s. In these video courses I demonstrate every mathematical conceptual and procedural skill you’ll need to master any HSC question.
For new students, there is no obligation to book a block of lessons upfront. I usually organise the first lesson with a ‘wait and see’ approach. I feel this is important for any new student to decide whether I am the best person to support them in maths, and whether we might have a positive and productive working association.
How does Maths with Lisa work?
Deliberate Practice
During the lesson, repetitive exercises will be given on concepts until the concept is understood and students feel comfortable working independently. Students will be encouraged to use strategies such as formatting, mathematical reasoning, talking through problems aloud and thinking independently.
Tutor based homework (study plan) will be set at the end of each lesson. Maths is a ‘doing’ skill so students must practice each concept until they have over-learned and mastered it.
Mentoring & Exam Tips
Often students experience exam anxiety and need some guidance around study skills, planning a study schedule and exam strategies. These strategies will be provided close to exam time to help students perform at their peak, walking into their maths exams feeling confident and thoroughly prepared.
